Louisiana Government

Lousiana government, like that of the United States, has three branches.
1. LEGISLATIVE
- Senate - 39 members
- House of Representatives - 105 members
- Members of both houses are elected for four-year terms. The Louisiana Legislature currently convenes annually in regular session in off-numbered years at noon the last Monday in March; even-numbred years at noon the last Monday in April for not more than 60 legislative days during a period of 85 calendar days.
2. EXECUTIVE
Power is vested in the state's elected officials:
- Governor
- Lieutenant Governor
- Secretary of State
- Atttorney General
- Treasurer
- Commissioner of Agriculture
- Commissioner of Insurance
- Commissioner of Elections
Note: The Lieutenant Governor also serves as the Commissioner of the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism.
Officials are elected for four-year terms.
3. JUDICAL
Judicial power rests in a state supreme court, courts of appeal, district courts and other lesser tribunals as provided by law. The supreme court has a chief justice and six associate justices. All Louisiana judges are elected.
