After Lincoln became president, seven Southern states seceded from the Union. The Confederacy was born when four more followed. As a young experiment in democracy, the United States was viewed by European governments as a case study. The Federals believed the "Union should prevail" and the Civil War resulted from efforts to keep the Union together.
