Louisiana possessed the mouth of the Mississippi River and the Port of New Orleans, the country's second largest port. With steamboating in its heyday and vast volumes of crops and goods passing down the Mississippi, New Orleans was the South's industrial and banking center. Also, the Mississippi River was one of the confederacy's main transportation routes for both supplies and men.
