LT. GOV. LANDRIEU ON THE DEATH OF
Baton Rouge, LA - Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement on the death of Big Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana:
“The shocking and tragic death of Big Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana bears great significance for the citizens of New Orleans and of Louisiana. In his life and in the last moments before his death, Big Chief Montana sent us all a powerful message - the violence and racial tension must stop."
“Tootie served as a shining example of a leader that sought the higher common ground. He embodied the beauty of the rich, cultural tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians. He was an innovator and a creative genius, nationally recognized for his artistic talent. Deeply rooted in the positive aspects of his culture, he steered the Indians away from divisiveness and physical violence."
“With the death of the Big Chief, we have lost a genuine Louisiana treasure. I join countless members of the New Orleans community in mourning his death. It is my hope that together we will build on his legacy."
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Montana family and the Mardi Gras Indians at this time. Big Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana will be deeply missed.”
