Statement of Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu on the selection of the site for the LSU/VA Hospital:

"I would like to thank our many partners, at the city, state and federal levels for their commitment to making this project a reality. We are dedicated to preserving the historic character of the area while creating a state of the art facility that will be a centerpiece of smart growth in New Orleans.

"This joint facility will serve three important functions. It will be a primary provider of world-class healthcare to people throughout the region. It will anchor a biomedical research corridor, spurring investment and creating good jobs. And finally, it will train the next generation of medical personnel that will care for the people of Louisiana and the greater Gulf Coast.

"We still have a long way to go to realize the full potential of this hospital. We will continue to work with FEMA to secure the necessary funding to replace the current academic facility. This hospital can be a shining example of how we can rebuild New Orleans as a sustainable, 21st century city."
