LT. GOV. LANDRIEU PARTNERS WITH TAVIS SMILEY, STATE OF THE BLACK UNION TO HOST DAY OF SERVICE

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and radio talk show host Tavis Smiley will bring together volunteers from across the country for State of the Black Union (SOBU) Builds, a day of service designed to assist Greater New Orleans residents in rebuilding efforts.

The SOBU Builds will mobilize 1,000 volunteers on Friday, February 22 at five community service projects across New Orleans from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. SOBU Builds is the largest single African American volunteer service day since the post-Katrina rebuilding efforts began.

The Office of the Lt. Governor is the title sponsor of SOBU Builds.

Friday, Feb. 22
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Fannie C. Williams Middle School
11755 Dwyer Road, New Orleans
Volunteers will work to beautify the school and paint murals.

12:45 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.
New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity: Musician's Village
4000 N. Roman, New Orleans
Volunteers will help with home construction.

Other community partners and service projects include:

  • School painting with Trinity Christian Community
  • Lafayette Academy of New Orleans at 2727 South Carrollton Ave., New Orleans
  • Home renovation with Xavier University and the 7th Ward Neighborhood Association at 1800 Duels Street, New Orleans
  • Tree planting with the National Wildlife Federation Bayou Segnette State Park at 7777 Westbank Expressway, Westwego
