Lt. Gov. Landrieu Announces State Park Swimming Pools Opening For Memorial Day Weekend
BATON ROUGE, LA - Today, Lt. Governor Landrieu announces that the Office of State Parks will open swimming pools for the Memorial Day Weekend and the summer season on Saturday, May 26.
"The swimming pools at our State Parks are just one of many recreational opportunities for young people to enjoy during the summer," said Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu, whose office recently announced a joint venture with the AmeriCorps VISTA program, to provide summer programming for at-risk youth. "We encourage families and friends to come out and swim at our beautiful parks when the weather is warm and where the scenery is beautiful."
State Parks with swimming pools available for day-use include: Chemin-A-Haut in Bastrop; Chicot in Ville Platte; Lake Bistineau in Doyline; Lake D'Arbonne in Farmerville; and North Toledo Bend in Zwolle. Bayou Segnette State Park in Westwego offers a wave pool. All sites provide certified lifeguard supervision for swimmers in park pools.
"Memorial Day weekend has always marked the unofficial beginning of the vacation season. We want visitors to our State Parks to enjoy all the amenities that the system has to offer," said Secretary of Culture Recreation and Tourism Angèle Davis.
From August 1 through Labor Day, pools at State Parks will be open on modified schedules. Visitors are advised to check with the individual parks for specific days and hours of operation. All pool schedules are subject to change. Pool hours of operation, fees charged and pool schedule exceptions at each State Park are as follows:
Chemin-A-Haut State Park - 14656 State Park Road, Bastrop, LA
Chicot State Park - 3469 Chicot Park Road, Ville Platte, LA
Lake Bistineau State Park - La. Hwy. 163, Doyline, LA
Lake D'Arbonne State Park - La. Hwy. 2, Farmerville, LA
North Toledo Bend State Park - La. Hwy. 3229, Zwolle, LA
Due to scheduling conflicts, the following sites will open their swimming facilities on Friday, June 1:
Bayou Segnette State Park - 7777 Westbank Expressway, Westwego, LA
St. Bernard State Park - 501 Saint Bernard Parkway, Braithwaite, LA
The swimming pool at Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville is closed for the summer, due to construction on day use facilities.
Day-use swimming pools at State Parks will operate six days per week through the beginning of August when a revised schedule will be announced. All pools will be closed one day each week for maintenance. During all operational weeks when there is no national holiday scheduled on a Monday, the pools will be closed on Mondays for maintenance. When pools are open on a holiday Monday, the pools will be closed for maintenance on the Tuesday following the holiday Monday.
"Safety is an important issue," said Stuart Johnson, assistant secretary for the Office of State Parks. "And while we pledge to provide a safe environment for our visitors we stress the need for all rules and regulations to be followed."
State Parks with designated beach swimming areas include Cypremort Point SP in Cypremort Point, Jimmie Davis SP in Chatham, Grand Isle SP on Grand Isle, Lake Bistineau SP, Lake Bruin SP in St. Joseph, and Lake Claiborne SP in Homer. All beach areas are open daily, but do not have lifeguard supervision. Standard day-use admission of $1 per person provides beach access. The beach area at Fontainebleau SP in Mandeville remains closed due to construction on day use facilities.
Tickfaw SP in Springfield, Lake Bruin SP in St. Joseph, Lake Fausse Pointe SP in St. Martinville and Poverty Point Reservoir SP in Delhi have water playground facilities for children. The playgrounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and available to overnight and day-use visitors.
