LT. GOVERNOR LANDRIEU & LOUISIANA SERVE COMMISSION AWARD GRANT TO PLAQUEMINES PARISH GOVERNMENT
Monies awarded will fund efforts to preserve historic artifacts at Fort Jackson Historic Site
Baton Rouge, LA - Today, Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu announced that the Louisiana Serve Commission in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor has awarded a $30,000 grant to the Plaquemines Parish Government to help restore historic artifacts at Fort Jackson Historic Site in Triumph, LA.
"Through this grant we are continuing to rebuild our Cultural Economy by preserving historic artifacts that tell the story of our unique culture and heritage," said Landrieu.
Plaquemines Parish Government received the grant money in 2005 from the Corporation for National and Community Service, Home Depot and Louisiana Serve Commission after Hurricane Ivan struck Plaquemines Parish. At that time, the terms of the grant allowed Plaquemines Parish to access the funds until February 15, 2006. However, before the funds could be put to use, Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Due to the extenuating circumstances, the Louisiana Serve Commission received approval to extend the grant to Plaquemines Parish through the summer of 2006.
Fort Jackson is the landmark for one of the most significant victories the Union experienced during the Civil War. General Andrew Jackson built the fort after he defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans and realized the crucial need to secure the mouth of the Mississippi. Fort Jackson also served as a training facility during the First World War.
The Louisiana Serve Commission in the office of Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu serves as the focal point for national service efforts in the state and acts as a clearing-house for national service programs operating in Louisiana. The corporation for National and Community Service provides funding for the commission.
