Program Offerings:

  • Elementary School (3rd - 4th Grades) - LOOP offers a threepart curriculum for each season: Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each season includes an in-class instructional workshop followed by a half-day or full field trip, which provides students with a ‘hands on’ outdoor learning experience.
  • Lower Middle School – (5th & 6th Grade)
The Intensive: Participants develop soft skills in a measured and consistent manner through school visits and training at City Park. Activities start with simple problem-solving initiatives and canoe lessons and build up to a culminating event.
Membership: Upon successful completion of The Intensive, students are granted membership to LOOP, whereupon they are eligible to participate in a series of workshops, day trips, and overnight camping trips.
  • Upper Middle School –(7th & 8th Grade)
Intensive and Membership: Upper middle school students follow the same model employed in the lower middle school grades, with a more rigorous academic and technical curriculum, including Adventure Challenge Course programming.
  • High School (9th – 12th Grades)
Interns: Through targeted mentorship and soft skills training, interns develop skills in leadership, responsibility, compassion, and a strong work ethic.
Classroom Connections: LOOP works to customize programs with high school teachers, weaving activities through the academic year.
Outdoor Club: Extra curricular activities with sessions after school and on weekends including activities such as canoeing, backpacking, camping, wilderness travel and community service projects.

Summer Program Offerings:
Summer programming, less intensive than school year programming, for elementary and middle school students includes a half day of training in City Park, and a full day field trip to Fontainebleau State Park and Lake Pontchartrain in Mandeville.

  • Elementary School (Rising 3rd - 4th Grades): The Choctaw Way - An Introduction to Archaeology.
Day 1: Scout Island and Couturie Forest, City Park New Orleans
Participants travel in canoes across the Scout Island lagoon to Couturie forest, where they practice team-building through initiative games, and learn about how the Choctaw Indians lived off of the land. They use clay to create Choctaw artifacts, which LOOP staff collects and lets dry.
Day 2: Fontainebleau State Park, Mandeville
Participants walk the boardwalk trail, "fishing and hunting” as the Choctaw did. They unearth artifacts on Choctaw Beach, and swim in Lake Pontchartrain.
  • Middle School (Rising 5th- 8th Grade)
Day 1: Scout Island and Couturie Forest, City Park New Orleans
Participants learn basic canoe safety and paddling techniques in the lagoons around Scout Island. They work to develop soft skills as a group working through initiatives and playing team-building games.
    Day 2: Cane Bayou, Mandeville
Participants canoe a little over a mile through cypress swamp into fresh and intermediate marsh, as they make their way to Lake Pontchartrain, where everyone climbs out of canoes to swim and fish in the Lake.
