||Having been a resident of St. Frances Cabrini Parish (Chamberlain Dr. and Athis Street, one block from the church) for the majority of my life, I have many great memories of that church. I was baptized, confirmed and married there. I also attended many funerals there. So, it is with a sad heart that I view it today. However, prudence dictates that the church must go. This structure has served its purpose, it was a place for people to congregate and worship. Without a community to congregate, it has no other purpose. The physical building blocks of the community are absolutely secondary to the well-being and health of the people that comprise it. In order for this area to rebound after Katrina, this vacant eyesore must be removed and replaced with an institution that will attract the type of parishioners that will sustain the area for the long-term. This area needs an institution like Holy Cross School.
Hurricane Katrina and the Archdiocese' decision not to reopen the church was the death knell for the structure and the church parish. Please do not let the normal Governmental bureaucracy stand in the way of this important step in the re-building of my beloved neighborhood.
