Name: Wendy King
City: New Orleans, LA
Specific
property
affected:
Milne Boys' Home (Colored Waifs' Home) 5420 Franklin Avenue/Milton Street
Comments: This is where Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong lived as a young boy, and where he got his first cornet. Our city's administration's push seems geared towards demolishing many of our city's most important jazz-related buildings, rather than working with jazz history experts and preservationists, towards stabilizing these buildings, and then finding buyers who appreciate these buidlings' histories, and the stories they can tell about our history, especially our city's central role as one of the main birthplaces of jazz. The outbuildings proposed for demolition should be preserved and then restored, with a plaque noting their role in our city's history, and how a young boy, sent there after getting into trouble, emerged with a horn in his hand and a path towards a productive life and worldwide fame in music, theater, and the movies.
